#BestZap Contest
A fan competition tied to the VintageAirRally Crete2Cape, built around the rally emblem and a chance to see the Rally Start in Crete.
The fan zone adds an interactive layer to the Vintage Air Rally Crete2Cape, giving supporters a way to take part even before the aircraft leave Crete. A BestZap contest built around the rally emblem invites entrants to explore the visual identity of the event and show what the journey means to them. It is a small but fitting addition to a route that already runs from island skies to the plains of Africa, and it encourages people to engage with the spirit of the expedition rather than simply watch it unfold.
Participation in a contest like this offers a hint of what lies ahead: the Rally Start in Crete, the departure itself, and the long chain of legs that follow. Enthusiasts, crews, and supporters all tend to be drawn in by the romance of vintage aeroplanes, and a competition channel turns that fascination into something participatory. The reward, a chance to witness the start of the gathering in Crete, ties the contest directly to the emotional core of the event.
The contest also reflects how the rally is more than a flying feat. Alongside the aviation programme, the Vintage Air Rally carries news, charity themes, partners, and supporters, connecting historic flight with wider causes and international attention. A fan-driven emblem design contest lets supporters express that connection in a personal way, contributing artwork and enthusiasm to a project that has been built step by step through blogs, newsletters, fanzones, and press coverage since the idea first took shape.
Behind the contest sits a route of extraordinary variety: island departure points, African highlands, savannah plains, coastlines, spice-scented islands, and long crossings over water and desert. Imagining that emblem travelling that distance makes any fan contribution feel like a small part of the story. The fanzone and BestZap contest extend the Vintage Air Rally Crete2Cape beyond the cockpit, inviting everyone to follow, imagine, and share in a legendary adventure of pioneering flight.
How to Enter
Fans were invited to take a photo holding or displaying the VintageAirRally logo and share it publicly tagged with #bestzap and #VintageAirRally. The contest was announced on the rally blog on 24.06.2016 as part of the lead-up coverage to the Crete2Cape journey.
The Prize
Selected winners were offered a trip to the Rally Start in Crete, with full board accommodation and travel costs covered, plus the chance of a flight in a biplane. The prize connected fans directly to the opening stages of the rally before its departure for Cape Town on 12 November 2016.
The contest sat alongside the rally's wider blog coverage, which tracked crew arrivals, press features, and charitable partnerships in the weeks before departure.
